Club History
The Nuku’alofa Fishing Club was established in 2002 (22-08-2002 Constitution adopted) by a group of fishing enthusiasts. At that time the sport fishing clubs in Tonga came under the TIGFA umbrella, this was later changed to form a standalone club which is IGFA affiliated to cover International Tournaments and provide a governing body.
Initially the club struggled to find premises, The current location at Faua Harbor sea wall was gifted by the late Baron Vea and a small tin builders shed (Ex Fletchers) was erected. This has now grown to a club house and bar with decks, pontoon and weigh station. Development has been steady as the club membership numbers increased.
The clubhouse was officially opened 7 Feb 2004 by Hon Tuita the then Minister for Fisheries
Prior to the clubhouse being opened, meetings were held at the Billfish Bar and Restaurant and an official Weigh station was in use at Pangaimotu Island Resort.
Membership numbers are currently around 170 but has peaked at around 230 in 2010
Fishing around Tongatapu is mainly boat based chasing tropical sport fish. The club runs monthly tournaments for its members and partakes in the Tonga International Game fishing Association events. There is a small active fleet of around 11 vessels.
The club was incorporated in 2011 and a new constitution was drafted and accepted by the members. This reflects are more modern approach to take us into the future.
It is currently managed by a committee and employs one fulltime barman and is available to any member from 4pm-9pm Wednesday to Sunday.
At January 2018 only 1 of the 5 founding members remain in the Kingdom; Dene Vete.
